grandma rhonda

It's been a week since grandma Rhonda stopped over after having supper with her dad on her birthday. They went to a nice restaurant near here. Grandma Rhonda was a bit bummed that grandpa Craig was out of town for her birthday.
So we surprised her with an ice cream cake! She loved it. But more so, she loved getting a big group picture of her and all her grandchildren.
After all, I'm an only child, so my children are her only grandchildren!
And she loves them so much.

there's something about today

There is something about today that has felt a bit like I am floating in a dream world. Nothing was ordinary and nothing was extraordinary. But my feelings today are different and I can't seem to put a finger on it.

Today I started back in with physical therapy on my knee, except this time I've started with a new place and a new therapist. I wasn't totally impressed with my previous therapist and heard some good recommendations for the place I am at now. My first impressions of her were high. She took a different approach than I experienced previously. Instead of just looking at my knee and giving me a few stretches, she was actually taking measurements of my knee to look for external swelling. Of course my right knee measured bigger than my left knee, so she could see there was swelling there. She figures there is swelling internally as well.

Next she made marks on my knee and took more extensive measurements. This way she can measure the progress we make and can see if the swelling is going down based on the measurements too, not just on my words on how I feel. She gave me one stretch to work on twice a day and then proceeded to ultrasound and E-Stim, which my orthopedic surgeon had wanted done all along. That's a whole different story. But this is where things got weird.

As she's ultrasounding my knee, we're talking and all is good, but then she started coughing. I'm not really noticing she's coughing other than the fact that she is apologizing. The coughing continued and then she apologizes for choking on her peanuts. At this point, I stepped outside of my body and floated above her like I was oblivious to what she just said. I remember thinking how can one choke on their peanuts when they've been in the room with me for over 20 minutes and she hasn't eaten anything. The coughing gets so bad she's now got tears running down her face. I told her I thought she should get a drink to which she said she was almost done with the ultrasound. It was really weird. And it kept going. Finally the ultrasound finished and she left to get a drink, and then came back in and started coughing, and left to get a drink, and came back in and started coughing, and left to get a drink, and finally came back in with her water.

Finally, she hooked up the E-Stim and left the room. I relaxed and floated around, basically bored out of my mind wondering about her choking. When she came back in at the end, she was no longer coughing. She told me she was surprised at the delayed reaction to the choking. Like I said, it was odd.

The day progressed as it usually does. I went to pick up Jayden from preschool and decided I wanted to take him to the Children's Museum again instead of going back to work. So that's what I did. The weather was beautiful and the museum was quiet. We went outside, took off his shoes, and let him play in the water. I loved watching him and being with him. Typically on Tuesday's this isn't an option because I am at work until at least 5:30. By taking advantage of this, I realized something....a dream I have.

I wish I could be here for my kids. I wish I didn't have student loans, car payments, or other big bills. I think in my own dream world today I was living where money grew on trees and things were perfect. Like I said, there was something about today that was different. I want to be home with my kids and be a stay at home mom. But at this point, I just pinch myself to wake up because that isn't going to happen in my near future.

Falls Park

As I've mentioned in the past, picture taking is a real passion of mine. In Sioux Falls, the falls were really roaring on Sunday. It was beautiful to see all the water pounding on the rocks creating waterfalls, foam, and swirling holes.

This guy was just hanging out enjoying the beauty of mother nature.

I could have watched the falls more intently had I not had a 3 year old with me, but I was always watching him. Motherly instincts were heightened near the water.

So I went up in the tower, took a few picture, walked around the exterior and told my husband I was going back down. I do not like heights and it spooked me and made me feel very dizzy.

Sunday

Today was such a busy day, wow! It went so fast, I feel like I forgot to breathe. We went to church this morning and then went to Sioux Falls. Our time was short in Sioux Falls, but we did manage to go to Falls Park, which was amazing! I took lots of pictures, but haven't downloaded them to the computer yet. I will post some when I get time. On our way home, we decided we weren't in a hurry because we had to pick up the older girls from church, so instead of driving all the way home and coming back, we drove 55 mph on the interstate. All the way home. Let me say, I don't think the people in the construction zone appreciated that. Oh well, such is life.

Once we remembered there were still beds to be made and folders to be gone through, we figured we needed to drive all the way home and then I would turn around and come back. So that's what I did. I felt rushed and that makes me anxious and I feel like I'm still anxious from the day.

A week ago when we were in Sioux Falls I tried on a pair of shoes that I really liked, but didn't buy. Today, I was going to buy them, but they were gone. I guess when they were on sale last week, they must have sold out. Lesson learned....buy shoes while on sale if you really want them. In the end, it saved me money, so I can't complain.

G'night all. Look for some pictures this week. :-)

winner

Today I received a very exciting phone call. The lady on the other end of the phone said my name had been drawn and I won tickets to see the Vikings! I had to choose between this weekend or December 5th, so I picked the later. This weekend was too close to get organized. And plus, my husband's birthday is December 10th, so this was a great present for him.

We're really excited. This is the first time we've gotten to go anywhere over night since September of 2005. I think we're due!

Now....to find some loving family members who will watch our children! Any volunteers? :-)

sleep

I slept ok last night, I think. Only got up once to use the bathroom. Was sleeping at a decent time, maybe around 10pm, and I slept til 8:30am. But after being awake for 30 minutes, I was exhausted like I hadn't slept at all. In fact, I was so tired today that I took a 3 1/2 hour nap! Now I'm sure that's going to screw up my sleep tonight, since it is 10:15pm already and I'm not tired.

I'm clueless why I'm so tired. I've been coughing for 3 weeks now. I had a cold in the beginning and it eventually went away, but the cough is just lingering. Maybe my body is still run down. Who knows.

I'm thankful my wonderful husband could see I needed to sleep today and let me be. That doesn't happen around here very often with 6 kids.

Children's Museum

We had so much fun today at the children's museum. It opened last weekend, so we figured it was going to be crazy busy today, but thought we would give it a shot anyhow. Surely it was busy, but still manageable. If you ever get a chance to come to Brookings it's definitely worth your time to check out the place. There is so much to do for children of all ages. I took 100 pictures today, so here are just a few of the better ones.
The first room we checked out was exciting for the kids as they didn't know what else was to come. Devin loved moving on the creeper under the car where she changed the muffler several times. Joseph and Dalton changed tires and air filters, while Shaylee and Shawndra checked the oil and changed the license plates!
The grocery store is really fun. The kids pushed carts around and filled them with groceries. they then took them to the register where they could place them on the belt and ring them up. Shawndra was funny with her potatoes.
And Shaylee was showing off her carrots!
Joseph made sure he rang up everything that was on the counter and if he couldn't get it to ring up, he set it aside, just like a cashier would do in a real store.
Oh my, this next area is called Kids Live (I think). Joseph absolutely loved this one, although he doesn't say it was his favorite. He spent 15 minutes getting dressed up in his suit so he would look like a real professional newsman on tv. This is the green room, so as the kids are standing there they can see themselves on the tv.
Joseph took the job seriously and Dalton stood in the background laughing. I believe at this moment they were talking about the weather and it looked like they were in front of a tornado on the tv.
This is what we saw when we looked above them. It was so fun to watch. Kids would run up there and say things like, "There is a bad tornado outside and you might not survive!" and then walk off camera. It was hysterical, yet interesting to see how children think about scary situations like tornadoes.
Oofta, the water room could amuse any kids for well over an hour. In fact, any of the rooms could. Balls would drop from the ceiling and go down a plinko type wall and splash into the pool of water below.
Devin is shooting water at different toys to make them move and spin.
In the big room, there was this really neat climbing feature. It is full of surfboards and nets and kids can crawl all the way to the ceiling. Shaylee is sitting in the middle.
We finally went outside to see another main attraction to the museum. If you live in Brookings, you can guess why Devin looks this way.
Can you guess what they are looking at?
A life size, interactive, dinosaur is outside. It roars, moves it's mouth, tail and feet. It's amazing to say the least.
Dalton and Joseph worked together to move big fossils from the sand to the table in order to inspect them closer. It was neat to see them work so well to help each other.
Jayden liked climbing on the logs and checked out the water outside, too.
Today was awesome. We actually purchased a family membership. I can't wait to burn off time on those cold winter days. What a great thing to have in our town, so close to home for once!

toothless wonder

Little Miss Devin is now 5 1/2, almost 6, a Kindergartner, and missing her two front teeth!
She's loving school and even comes home with homework. Can you believe that...in Kindergarten, they get homework?!
The other thing we have noticed with Miss Devin is she is likely going to be left hand. When she's writing she will start in the right hand and then switch to the left hand. Same goes with eating, she might start in one hand, but switches to the other hand. We have noticed she writes more clearly when using her left hand. However, we aren't forcing the left hand, we're just waiting it out to see which one dominates.

Grandpa Craig says we shouldn't label her with that curse, yet. He's a lefty too!

a week later

A week later, here I am. With nothing new to post. Maybe as I type, I'll come up with something. I could tell you how stressed and emotional I have been lately, or how the job is not as enjoyable as it used to be, or how I love how my little boy is in preschool. Yes, that's it!

Jayden has started going to preschool and he's doing so well! The first day he was a bit skeptical, but did ok once I left. The second day he was more familiar with what is going on and more exploratory of the room. The third day, he told all the teachers his mom was leaving. :) He's doing great and having a great time! Melts my heart.

Other than that, not much is new here. I come to blog on a daily basis and look at it and kind of cringe. I think I need some post ideas, so if there is anything anybody wants to know or see, I'm up for the challenge. I do like challenges!!

50mm lens

I absolutely love my 50mm lens I got for my camera. I use it almost all the time. My other two lenses are collecting dust inside my camera bag. I never thought I would fall in love with a camera that had no ability to manually focus. By this I mean, I have to move myself closer or farther away from the subject. It's not just a twist of the hand anymore. The other day, I was sitting in the truck and this interesting bug landed on the antenna. See how the bug is in focus and the entire background is blurred? Love it!
I also did the same thing while we were investigating milkweed that same day. The wind was blowing and making for all kinds of challenging shots, but this was one I liked. Again, the milkweed is in focus and the rest of the background is blurred. That's the beauty of the 50mm lens!
If the subject you're shooting isn't really far away from the background (depth of field), then the picture won't be as blurry. In fact, the closer your subject is to the background, the less blurry. I also like to shoot in AV mode where I can control the F-Stop. Depending on how much light there is, I like to move the F-Stop all the way down to 1.8. If it's too light, then I have to move it up higher to maybe 2.5.
So now that I have started mastering my camera, the next thing I really, really want is Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. But those are anywhere from $125-300. It sure would be fun to have something like that though to edit these pictures in. I've been lucky enough to play with Adobe CS4 and Lightroom on some free versions. They are both fairly tricky, but so fun to play around with.

update

My husband tells me tonight that I need to update my blog because he needs to know what's going on. I tell him I haven't had a laptop. He says I've had one for a day, so now I can update. Here you go honey...as if you weren't here this week! :)

After my last post, I planned to update my blog every single day in September. Then the next evening, we had a really nice storm that we were enjoying until it fried my laptop. So that put a halt to blog updating. Of course, I had have lots of pictures I can put into future posts, so hopefully they will come soon. Back to the point, my laptop itself was not fried, just the power cord that charges it, so we were lucky. Just had to wait until the new cord arrived in the mail.

Work for me this past week was pretty crappy. It seems everybody is feeling the stress of the new year and people are snapping at each other. It's hard for me to not take stuff like that personal. I try to let it roll off my shoulders, but it's something that I remember clearly for a long time.

Then, my oldest daughter got sick. She had to go to the doctor and get put on some antibiotics. If someone in my house gets sick, you can guess what happened next. Yep, I got sick. It started on Friday and has been getting progressively worse. As of today, when I cough, it feels like there are knives in my throat and in my chest. I'm hoping today is the worst day because I haven't hit the peak yet and I really need to work next week! If I'm sick, I can't do what my job tells me to do.

Tonight, Shawndra was involved in an electric scooter accident. She was at a friends house and they took out the scooter for a ride (without the mom knowing) and Shawndra fell off the back and was dragged on the pavement. She has road rash abrasions on her knees and her toes are very raw. Her pants were ripped and her flip flops wrecked. It could have been much worse. I'm not sure Shawndra would agree right now though. She is soaking her feet and has wet rags on her knees, since we're trying to get things cleaned up. She's been shaking and crying and using lots of sarcasm. We're thankful it wasn't any worse than this.

So all in all, that's what this week has looked like. We've been laying low and not doing much other than that.
